⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Toshinori Yagi aka All Might
Age: HAH HAH HAH—seriously this is the canon response… (unknown, estimated anywhere from late 40’s to late 50’s)
Canon: My Hero Academia
Canon Point: Chapter 194

Background: here

Personality:As a young boy Toshinori Yagi had a strong sense of justice. Growing up in the turbulent time when society hadn’t quite adjusted to the majority of people holding super powers of some kind (known as Quirks) he felt that what was needed to stabilize it was a symbol of peace—a pillar of justice that would bolster faith by the public while simultaneously deterring crime. He swore to become that symbol himself despite being quirkless—and was eventually given the power to do that by his predecessor Nana Shimura whom passed on a power stockpiling quirk called One for All. With One for All Toshinori went on to become exactly what he set out to become—a hero strong enough that he seemed unbeatable and because of that he fortified the public’s faith in the professional hero system and society seemed to stabilize. As All Might he was considered the top hero and actually did become known as the symbol of peace.

Although other heroes’ identities are, for the most part, public information Toshinori chose to keep all aspects of his personal life completely separated from his All Might persona for a number of reasons. First and foremost was because he emulated Nana Shimura, who chose to sever her familial ties after her husband was killed (likely due to villain meddling) and put her son into foster care. By keeping everything separated he hoped to keep anyone in connection to Toshinori Yagi from being targeted by enemies of All Might. Of course, because of the sheer amount of work he did as All Might his life as Toshinori Yagi practically disappeared. He was essentially All Might 24-7.

Toshinori’s All Might persona is essentially an exaggeration of ideals of justice combined with influences from his time training and interning in America. He is loud and boisterous with a constant smile regardless of what is happening. Whether he is just speaking to an ordinary citizen or in a fight with a villain, he is always smiling, often laughing with booming volume and speaking in a distinct over-the-top hero style fit for 1950’s Batman or Superman comics. His constant smile is another trait he carries for Shimura. She taught him that no matter what he was feeling on the inside he should smile because it was always the strongest heroes that smiled. Maintaining that smile through everything served two purposes. First, it served to trick him out of his own fear. Second, it was an assurance for anyone he might be helping to show that they would be alright because he was there to save them and so confident that he was smiling through it all. All Might plays dumb often as well, hiding the full extent of his knowledge and also uses misdirect tactics to avoid answering certain questions—such as his age. Sometimes it isn’t an act though, he really is a bit bumbling with it comes to interpersonal relations simply because he hasn’t had many—this can definitely be seen with his attempts at teaching, or at least his one-on-one coaching (at least with anyone other than Izuku Midoriya).

Five years before the start of the series Toshinori was gravely injured by his arch nemesis All For One. He barely survived the injury—from the manga descriptions and the images of the scarring his left side of his lower chest cavity was caved in and/or ripped out and he was partially disemboweled. He is missing organs from the damage, most notably his stomach and likely a lung. Between the trauma of the injury itself and the surgeries required for him to survive his body essentially wore itself out to the point that he could no longer use One For All efficiently, the use of the quirk almost like an endurance exercise that he can only maintain for approximately three hours. The removal of his stomach in particular caused him to lose a massive amount of weight to the point that he appears dangerously underweight and is compared to a skeleton often, his appearance even scaring people on the street. When using One For All he “flexes” into his muscle form—the visage that society recognizes—and compares it to guys sucking in their guts at the pool. When he reaches his endurance limit he literally deflates in a cloud of steam.

Some time just before or just after his first fight with All For One his sidekick at the time, Night Eye, used his quirk on All Might. Night Eye’s quirk essentially lets him see the future of whoever he looks at—and he saw All Might killed in one of the most unimaginable and horrible ways possible approximately six years from then. Because that foretold time was nearing Toshinori chose to take a teaching position at UA High School to choose a successor in order to pass One for All on to the next person the same as Nana Shimura had to him. It’s at this point that he meets Izuku Midoriya and chooses him based off of witnessing Midoriya charge into a dangerous situation to attempt to save a classmate despite the fact that Midoriya was quirkless and literally powerless to help. After transferring One for All to Midoriya Toshinori’s time limit as All Might begins shrinking more and more, especially if he toes the line of that time limit. By the end of the summer after the school’s Spring semester he faces All For One a second time and uses up the last bits of One For All left in him in order to defeat the villain. Afterward there is literally nothing left and although he can still flex into his muscle form he can only hold it for less than a minute.

The loss of One For All is of great significance for Toshinori. As stated before, he spent most of his adult life as All Might with no real down time as Toshinori Yagi—so now that he has been forced into retirement he is somewhat lost, not only unable to protect the people around him, but not even able to protect himself. It is a note of great discord for him.

As Toshinori Yagi he is notably not as flamboyant as he is as All Might but he still holds equal passion, in particular with Midoriya and the other students. Often while training Midoriya to prepare him to inherit One for All he would have literal bursts of pride every time the boy would show promise that mirrored his own ideals—literally puffing up into his muscle form. He still occasionally does it after his retirement but not to the same effect since he can only hold the form for a short time. He is extremely proud of his students and is expecting great things from them. This is especially so because with the loss of his power he is trying especially hard to focus on cultivating the future rather than dwelling on the present that he can no longer actively affect. Despite that it is inevitable that he will turn inward and have bouts of self-deprecation because of what he perceives as his failures and the state he has come to be in, physically unable to act. Even so, he is a private man, having spent essentially his entire adult life without any close relations and does his best to hide this from those around him.

Regardless of this, Toshinori still has insane resolve and willpower, always willing to push past his limits whether physical or emotional. It is seen over and over again but most notably in his second battle with All For One when his withered form is revealed to the world due to him reaching the limit to which he could hold his muscle form. Still, he fought on pushing past his limits while doing what he was able to do—in this case move what little power he still had to just one arm at a time and all of this after receiving a harsh emotional blow in learning that one of the primary villains of the series is in reality Nana Shimura’s grandson, hand picked and groomed by All For One to be his successor. It is shown again in a flash back from when he was hospitalized after his injury from fighting All For One the first time. Despite the fact that he could barely walk and was no where near healed he was determined to return to the public eye as the Symbol of Peace to keep that pillar from crumbling. After that, just the fact that he managed to go for five years continuing his work as All Might while keeping the world in the dark about his injuries and his true form. Finally, in regards to the future that Night Eye saw, at first he had chosen to continue head long into it believing it could not be changed—because indeed, Night Eye’s visions had never been wrong—but since meeting Midoriya every time he has thought the end was upon him Midoriya was there, each time giving him just enough time to escape death. Because of that he had chosen to do everything he can to twist fate to his will.

At face value Toshinori is a friendly though slightly awkward man, using misdirect tactics or simply playing dumb to avoid people learning too much about him or getting too close to him. As people get closer to him his heroic ideas come more into play in how he speaks, his awkward dorkiness dropping off in favor of seriousness. Finally, under the right circumstances his passion as a former hero will still shine through.

Abilities: Toshinori was the 8th holder of the quick “One For All,” which gave him a myriad of a abilities including super strength, speed and invulnerability. However, at his current canon point he has passed the quirk on to Izuku Midoriya and used up the last lingering remnants of the quirk remaining in his body. He is still able to flex into his “muscle form” but can only hold it for a few seconds, maybe a minute at most, making it more of a parlor trick than anything else. He now is a normal, though abnormally tall and abnormally skinny, human being.

Alignment: Peromei At his current canon point Toshinori has gone from being recognized in Japan as the number one hero as well as the Symbol of Peace because he was powerful enough that his mere existence was a deterrent for crime and a stimulus for hope in society. Now, having both lost his power and having had his state of health become public knowledge he is watching powerlessly (literally) as the society he helped build up as the Symbol of Peace is beginning to be chipped away through public doubt and a stimulus of crime. Beyond that, he is also powerless to save even someone right in front of him, or even himself for that matter. All of this is a great source of despair for him, though it is not a feeling he would let anyone actually see. On the flip side of that, however, he has faith in his successor Izuku Midoriya and is certain that Midoriya will become the next Symbol of Peace and continue what he built. He also expects great things from all of this students, and that hope for the future helps balance out the despair of the present.

Other: Toshinori has some significant health issues. In his first fight with All For One he was gravely injured and was nearly killed. What he states is that his stomach had to be removed and his respiratory was heavily damaged. Likely there was more than that, but those two damages are what cause most of his health issues—in particular his emaciation and his constant coughing up blood.
